The difference maker behind Vancouver’s historic and every-changing Chinatown was named last night at the buzzing Heart of Chinatown Wrap Event hosted at Cafe Brixton. The Flats on Georgia would like to thank everyone who came out in support of the community contest. The nominations poured in over a month and the final decision was left to a handpicked judge panel consisting of City Councilor, Dr. Kerry Jang, event socialite and once resident of Chinatown, Frances Hui and lifestyle editor of Vancouver is Awesome, Rick Chung.
The Flats on Georgia is happy to announce that The Heart of Chinatown is Mike Leung, business partner of Chinatown’s own Harvest Community Foods. Mike asked the community of Chinatown what they wanted, answering their request to put the “local” back into local foods in the form of a grocery store/café. He and his business partner called on the community’s involvement allowing local residents to name the store, choose who would design the branding, and by working with a local foods buyer to create a healthy and convenient grocery store and café with an emphasis on local farmers.
Congratulations again to Mike, and all of the nominees. Through a 24 hour social media voting poll which collected over 200 votes, Mike and the team at Harvest Community Foods will donate the grand prize of $2000 to support Union Gospel Mission’s effort in the Downtown Eastisde.
Thank you to all who contributed to the Heart of Chinatown!
