The Flats on Georgia is excited to announce our Top 5 nominees for The Heart of Chinatown Community Contest. We combed the community looking for the difference makers, the game changers – the people driving positive change every single day. Through the Heart of Chinatown, we have collected an eclectic mix of businesses and individuals who make Chinatown a great place to live and work.

The Flats team would like to extend a big thank you to all of our nominees and all those who nominated – your efforts have made this contest a success!

The winner of the Heart of Chinatown will be announced Wednesday, April 11th at Chinatown’s own Caffe Brixton at the Heart of Chinatown Wrap Event. Stay tuned to see who will the $2000 donation to a select list of charities operating in the Downtown Eastside.

Get Warm Project

The Get Warm project is a blanket and goods drive aimed at bringing awareness to Vancouver’s homeless population, and outfitting these individuals with the necessary supplies to survive the biting winter weather. From November 2011 to February 2012, ‘Get Warm’ donation boxes were found in various locations throughout the Metro Vancouver community. The goods were picked up on a bi-weekly basis, and dropped off at the Union Gospel Mission. While the project is sure to help keep Vancouver’s homeless community safe and warm during winter, many hope it will create a long-term positive change; “establishing a wider community discourse about homelessness and poverty, and actively work towards ensuring that all members of our community are safe and have access to food, supplies, shelter and greater standards of living.

Pull Focus Film School is a non-profit film school that helps students develop story ideas for compelling, authentic, though provoking documentary films. Students are taught to write, produce, film and edit broadcast-quality mini docs to advance the media content of charity organizations. These mini docs are useful for fundraising purposes or community outreach work.

Mike Leung asked the community of Chinatown what they wanted, answering their request to put the “local” back into local foods in the form of a grocery store/café. He and his business partner called on the community’s involvement allowing local residents to name the store, choose who would design the branding, and by working with a local foods buyer to create a healthy and convenient grocery store and café with an emphasis on local farmers. Mike focused on a business model with a positive impact on the community, helping build a sustainable business they could call their own.

This organization is comprised of a group of Chinatown merchants who formed an association to keep the vibrancy of Chinatown businesses alive. Through the decades, this association has worked together and with other influences (such as the government) to face the issues faced by Chinatown. Their history is rich in legacy, and their accomplishments are numerous. The association has always been comprised of volunteer members who have spent most of their lives in the community, and strive to achieve the best for Chinatown.

Josh Michnik is the key player behind the idea and vision in developing “This Space” in which the community was called upon to vote and build the business that is now Harvest Community Foods. He has lived and worked on Union Street for over a year, and has been instrumental in turning it into the vibrant street that it is becoming. Josh has dedicated his life to this part of Chinatown, and will be a key leader in helping shape the positive changes throughout this community.

Andrew Wong

Andrew was one of the first young entrepreneurs to establish a business in Chinatown approximately 10 years ago – a modern restaurant that pays homage to his Chinatown Roots. The Wild Rice Restaurant is only Chinese restaurant that is completely organic, and uses locally-sourced (i.e., tofu from a local Chinatown tofu-maker) and sustainable ingredients. Andrew is an inaugural member of the Green Table Network and the OceanWise program. He has proudly hosted many fundraisers for organizations such as Shark Truth, the Food Bank, DTES Women’s Shelter, Crabtree Corner and Growing Chefs. When the tsunami hit SE Asia a few years back, Andrew organized Restaurants for Relief, where 20 restaurants in Vancouver raised money for disaster victims. He was raised in Chinatown, and continues to live there with his family.

Incorporated in 2000, the Vancouver Chinatown BIA has focused on improving Chinatown’s safety and cleanliness, expanding and strengthening its promotions and event, and working with the media and external partners to improve Chinatown’s public realm, public perception and relations.

Allen is a paramedic on the Downtown East Side, as well as a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer, a 5 year rider with Cops for Cancer, and a volunteer with both Union Gospel Mission and First United Church.

Capacity Links’ Seniors

Capacity Links Seniors is a non-profit program that delivers outreach and support services to vulnerable and fragile senior citizens in the Downtown Eastside and surrounding areas. This project helps seniors stay in their homes by providing the necessary services they require. In addition, Capacity Links’ Seniors also provides employment opportunities for women in Vancouver’s inner city by hiring them to provide non-medical home cleaning and accompaniment services for seniors in the Downtown Eastside. The Project utilizes the existing capacity of community seniors as volunteers by matching compatibility, residence, and first language.

Chinatown is changing and driving this change are the people within it. The people who live it, who breathe it, who embody the spirit of it. And that’s who we want. Tell us about the game changers, the revolutionaries, the moms and dads making this neighbourhood better.

Nominate your top difference maker and let us know what makes that person/business so awesome, or show us with photos/videos by Apr 2, 2012. The top five nominees will be announced on Apr 9th and invited to an event presented by The Flats at 219 Georgia East at Café Brixton on Apr 11th, where the winner will be announced by a panel of local judges.

When it comes to judging, we’re not a judgmental bunch but here’s the criteria we’ll be using to select the top 5:

  • Individuality: The top 5 contenders will all have their own personal approach & style
  • Charity: Whether it’s time, money, or care, show us how the person or business is giving back
  • Creativity: The more creative the entry, the better – send us photos, videos, life-size art installations, whatever gets your point across
  • Ingenuity: The more unique the contribution is to Chinatown community, the more our ears will perk up

Who says no good deed goes unpunished? The winner will receive $2,000 to donate to one of four pre-selected charities of choice.
